The lack of self-healing, and total reliance on healers to keep your health pool maintained at all times has been a thorn in Monk’s paw since Legion. It’s on the GCD, which is annoying, but it’s still an excellent addition that puts Brewmasters in a much better defensive position than they have been since Legion. Celestial Brew greatly improves on the original Guard design, granting a powerful absorb shield with zero resource cost on a cooldown that scales with Brew recharge and rewards skillful use of Purifying Brew with a larger shield. The community has wanted Guard back since it was removed with Legion, and the BFA talent was nothing like the original.

Outside of that season, Brewmasters have had decent success in Mythic+, but their lack of self-healing and relatively low damage have relegated them to a second-tier option in terms of both popularity and power among Mythic+ players. In Mythic+, Brewmasters were the most popular and powerful tank during Season 3 due to their strong defenses and the utility of Ring of Peace in displacing the Eternal Palace adds spread throughout dungeons by the seasonal affix. Sounds like a horrible class, right? Wrong! Monks have been the strongest, most popular raid tank for nearly all of BFA. Monks have several limitations to offset the tremendous advantage Stagger provides: low armor, small health pools, limited self-healing, one defensive cooldown (don’t say Zen Meditation), and a weakness to sustained magic damage. By evenly spreading out ~80% of all damage taken into a 10/13-second Stagger, Monks become dramatically less susceptible to spikes of damage than any other tank.
