I shot this image earlier in the year for a tutorial I did on The Photography Enthusiast. I was really happy with how this image turned out and plan to use this method more.

I had watched a tutorial on product photography that I wanted to give a try and this was my first subject. This image is one I took most recently out of the top 5. Below you will see in no particular order the images I picked including a brief description of them. There are the shots capturing the fun of a festival, like Parquets Courts’ Andrew Savage wearing a Devo hat, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh doing a pompom girl impression and the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne in his hamster bubble… and I am not even mentioning the Rockstar progeny doing their thing with success and talent (Jakob Dylan and Lulu Simon) or not (Paris Jackson)… this year was a lot of fun. With 2019 coming to an end, it is time to review my top 5 images of the year.

The famous jumps are always a success in photography, whether it is Starcrawler’s Arrow deWilde or the Shrine’s Josh Landau surf-crowding, or Shame’s Charlie Steen walking on the crowd, or Plague Vendor’s Brandon Blaine doing one of his legendary high jumps, or Rancid’s Tim Armstrong and the Hives’ Pelle Almqvist jumping at Punk Rock Bowling, or even the crowd (here punk model Erin Micklow) fully participating during a Long Shot show. The pop-rock stars of the moment were also well represented in my collection, mostly because they were releasing an album this year, and I would cite the most notable ones: Gary Clark Jr., Sharon Van Etten, Jenny Lewis, Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker, Weyes Blood, Orville Peck, Beck and Jack White with his Raconteurs. The legendary reunions also were part of this year, from Bauhaus to Bikini Kill and the Stranglers. I would also add to this list Bad Brains’ H.R., Robert Smith of the Cure, and of course Morrissey. Then there are the legends, the timeless icons that you get the chance to shoot once or twice, and I would definitively put Ringo Starr on this list – although he is available each year for his birthday – and certainly Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio (caught during the premiere of ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’), and Dennis Quaid doing a very believable rock star. Then there are the unique meetings, the photos that capture unique moments and opportunities when two (or more) stars are on the same shot… when Chuck D meets Shepard Fairey, when Wayne Kramer, Tom Morello, and Perry Farrell support the teachers’ strike, when Starcrawler, Steve Jones and Fred Armisen play together for the annual Johnny Ramone tribute, when Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, and Anderson. Sometimes, I just like the way they look because the lighting was right (Tropa Magica above), because I thought the expression on the performer’s face was interesting and was capturing an intense moment (Bone Acre and Mike Watt), or the position was photogenic (Tom Morello, Holy Wars, Death Valley Girls, Feist, Guns N’ Roses’ Steven Adler)… when you take hundreds of photos at a show, you feel lucky when there is one that pops up and makes all the other ones disappear. I was basically reliving the best moments of the many big or small events I went to, events involving either famous people or local indie bands, and I picked the following photos for several different reasons. 2019 was filled with photos, many of them, and trying to pick a few of these pictures to close 2019 is a hard task to do but also a lot of fun.
